Father's Day (+ a recipe!)


I spent this Father's Day at home with my family for the first time in several years, which was so wonderful.  We had our extended family over for lunch, and we had a nice, relaxing afternoon, eating and watching the US Open (I was really hoping Phil Mickelson would win!), and it was great to be with everyone.  I made some of my dad's favorites, and tried a few new things as well.  A few summers ago, when I was working in Vermont, I went to a fantastic dinner party where they served a roast with hollandaise sauce, and so this year, I came up with my own version.  I'm still working on perfecting my hollandaise recipe (although this one was just fine!), but I think my roast came out pretty well, if I do say so myself.


Rosemary Garlic Roast

5 lb chuck roast
1/4 cup white wine
1/2 cup olive oil
4 cloves garlic, chopped
2 sprigs fresh rosemary
freshly ground salt and pepper

Trim the fat from the roast, and coat with salt and pepper.  Combine all other ingredients in a glass bowl, and marinate meat for at least 2 hours, but preferably closer to 24.  When ready to cook, sear the roast in a skillet on medium-high heat, a few minutes each side.  Cook the roast either in the broiler or on the grill for about an hour and a half, or until internal temperature reaches 145 deg. F, turning once halfway through.  Let sit for 20 minutes before slicing and serving with your favorite hollandaise sauce.

My dad's favorite dessert is New Orleans-style bread pudding, and so I made my very first one in honor of the day as well.  I would highly recommend this pudding from Bon Appetit with a Bananas Foster twist, although next time I think I'll be a little more generous than the recipe suggests with the rum! ;)
